Xin Hua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was founded in 1958. With nearly 50 year’s efforts of all the medical workers at Xin Hua to make it prosperous, the hospital has become a modern comprehensive teaching institution with a complete installation of disciplines, special features and integrated with medical treatment, education and scientific researches. It has been awarded seven times the title of “ Civilized Unit “ of Shanghai, three times the title of “ National Advanced Collectivity “ and was granted the titles of Class A of Grade 3 Hospital in 1993. It was conferred the titles of “Advanced Unit “ in hospital cultural construction in China and “ Model of Study ” in Shanghai.
The hospital has a complete installation of disciplines with special features. The hospital accommodates 1,586 medical beds (including 358 beds at Shanghai Children’s Medical Center); 47 clinical departments, 66 specialties and 6 diagnostic and treatment centers. With the first rate comprehensive strength, the departments of Cardiology, Digestive Medicine, Neurology, General surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery, Dermatology and Clinical Nutrition Center are the key construction programs set respectively by the state, Shanghai Municipality, Shanghai Health Bureau and the hospital. The hospital has gained 21 city-and-school-level prizes for clinical medical achievements. The diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer, chronic hepatitis, hepatic fibrosis, stem cell transplantation, micro invasive surgery with laparoscope and thoracoscope, electro-vapor operation on hyperplasia of prostate and intracavitary galet have reached the advanced standard at home, while the prevention and treatment of myocardiopathy, radio frequency ablation in the treatment of arrhythmia, interventional therapy of coronary artery affection, micro invasive pass-b have reached the first class standard in China; Pediatric department has kept the leading position at home and the world advanced level, while interventional therapy of cardiovascular disease, open heart surgery on complex congenital heart disease, abnormity rectification, refractory leukemia, neonatal screening, diagnosis and treatment of hearing disorder in neonates are at the top level in China. The departments of Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery, stomatology have respectively their unique features.
As a teaching hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, it has, through the construction of disciplines, established a perfect platform for the upgrading of the standard of education and scientific research. Presently, the hospital has 3000 staff members, of them 83 percent are medical professionals among them 46 percent have middle or high ranking professional titles. The hospital now has 42 tutors for the training of doctor degree students, 181 tutors for the training of master degree students. Up till now, 5000 university graduates, over 300 masters, 100 post doctors have graduated respectively from its 25 masters degree programs, 8 doctor degree programs and the mobile post-doctorate stations. Fruitful results have been secured in the field of scientific research. Over the past 5 years, the hospital has won more than 30 second prizes of state scientific and technological progress; 10 patents have been authorized; 1698 theses have been published in magazines and journals of statistic resources, among them 66 embodied into SCI, 10 into ISTP and 5 into EI. 51 special works have been written out. The hospital has gained 183 research programs at the state, the ministry and Shanghai municipal level. Additionally, 《Journal of Clinical Pediatrics 》, an academic periodical of pediatrics , edited by the hospital and Shanghai Institute for Pediatric Research has been embodied as a data-bank.
The hospital boasts two clinical medical bases: Xin Hua Hospital (headquarter) in Shanghai Puxi area and Shanghai Children’s Medical Center in Shanghai Pudong new area with 2 Shanghai city-level clinical medical centers: Shanghai Clinical Medical Center for Pediatric Cardiovascular Diseases and Shanghai Clinical Medical Center for Pediatric Surgical Rectification. In the hospital campus stand 3 city-level research institutions: Shanghai Institute for Pediatric Research, Shanghai Institution for Pediatric Congenital Heart diseases, Shanghai Developmental Biology Laboratory and Shanghai Environment Science and Child Healthcare Laboratory; 3 affiliated colleges of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine: Pediatric Medical College, Xin Hua Clinical Medical College and Pediatric Continuing Educational College. It has invested in the establishment of such medical entity as Xin Hua Medical Development Company, and Xin Hua Pan-Asian Medical Investment and Management Co., Ltd. During the recent years and joint with Shanghai No. 3 Hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Chongming Baozheng People’s Hospital, Xin Hua Hospital, as a core hospital, has established the Xin Hua Hospital Group and emerged Yangpu District Central Hospital as a branch of the hospital, and reached agreements to aid 16 community healthcare service centers and medical institutions in Shanghai suburbs and rural areas.
The hospital has an area of more than 35 acres with green rate of 30% and a building acreage of 180,000 square meters. The hospital offers a beautiful and comfortable environment to patients with such first class medical facilities as outpatient building, surgical building, emergency building and Gynecology/Obstetrics and pediatric building as well as medical technology building. The building for science and education, which is under construction, will further ensure the fast development of the hospital’s medical care, education and research work. Shanghai children’s Medical Center has enjoyed great reputation from the society and its peers at home and abroad. Patients are provided with high quality services with the sophisticated medical equipment and instruments. The hospital has 1058 sets of equipment with an individual value of more than 10000 yuan in RMB. They include 3 MRI sets, 4 CT scanners, 3 DSA sets, 2 ECT sets, liner accelerator, Lower- Hyperbaric oxygen chamber, fully automatic biochemical analyzer, fully automatic protein analyzer, flow cytometer and a variety of testing, monitoring, imaging diagnostic facilities ensuring the high quality of diagnosis and treatment.
Since 1970s, the hospital has established more than 31 collaborative programs with overseas countries and regions including the United States, Japan, Canada, France, Hong Kong and Macao. With the support of US based Project HOPE, the hospital has built up Shanghai children’s Medical Center. The variety of increasing international exchanges have not only given a great impetus to the rapid development of the hospital but also brought forth to the world a good image.
